Duties and Responsibilities: The medical illustrator incorporates photography, videography and graphic design. The medical illustrator works in hospitals, healthcare facilities, medical schools, universities, research and development centers, pharmaceutical companies, medical equipment manufacturers and medical publishers. They use photography and video production so that they can record the moving or still parts of their patient's’ body. They focus on the parts that have suffered damage or have been affected by an illness of some kind. Medical illustrators also have to document treatment procedures, and patient progress. These images are then used to teach trainee doctors and budding medical scientist for further knowledge. Medical also focus on graphic design and illustrations for websites and resources. These illustrations and graphic designs are used for marketing, publishing education and research and development ideas. During these days medical illustrators do their work using more advanced tools such as the 2D and 3D imaging and software applications( for example, the Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

Salary: Their average salary can start around $62,000 and run up to about $100,00.

Education: They are required to have a Master’s Degree, certification(voluntary), field experience in medical illustrating. Some key skills they need are artistic ability, creativity, interpersonal skills and visual skills. You can take classes that involve photography and graphic illustrations.

Demand or Need for this Profession: It is expected to grow 4% between 2012- 2022.

   I would like to be a medical illustrator because i love to draw and I think it would be cool to be able to draw the parts of the body. I also like photography and had experience with doctors that had photography of my heart. This is why I would like to become a Medical Illustrator.
