St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day

The history of St. Patrick's day begins the day that the soon to be Saint Patrick is born. He birth name was Maewyn. He was actually born in Roman Britain. Then he was kidnapped into slavery and taken to Ireland. He later was able to escape and went to a monastery for safety. This monastery was in Gaul, France and this is where he converted into Christianity. He returned to Ireland in 432 as a missionary. And even though Christianity had already taken hold of the country, he confronted the Druids and Tara and abolished their pagan rights, which made Christianity even more widespread. Later in his years Patrick became a bishop. He then died on March 17th. He was then declared Ireland's Patron Saint. Up to this day we honor him every year on or around the 17th of March. We celebrate with parades and many other events.

The reason they started using green is because green is one of the tri colors on the irish flag and green has been used on several flags in revolutionary groups throughout history. Also Ireland is called the "Emerald Isle" for its lush green landscape. Also green is the color of spring, the shamrock and the green Chicago River. They also established the color green because it is said that it makes you invisible to leprechauns and fairies that pinch people who don't wear green.

Fun Facts:
