Optician

Duties and Responsibilities: An Optician is an technitioner that design's eyeglasses to fit the need of a person's vision. The receive the glasses prescription from the ophthalmologist and optometrists. The fit the needs of both children and adults. They also measure the customer's face and their eyes as well. They do this to know how far it is from the customer's pupils. They will also help their customer's choose a corresponding style and such as eye frames and lens treatments and any occupational eyewear in case the patient plays sports or tints or anti-reflective coatings. All this is based on their vision needs and style preferences. Opticians also create work for ophthalmic laboratory technicians, giving them information about the lenses needed. They may also adjust your eyewear to make sure that it fits perfectly. And in case your lenses or glasses break they can fix it or replace it. Also before you take your eyewear home they educate the customer about their eyewear, for example how to care for their specific eyewear. They also have to perform business tasks such as maintain sales records, keeping track of customer's prescription, etc.

Salary: 34,840 is the Optician's average salary per year.

Education: Complete a Post-secondary education program, High School Diploma, on job training, have business skills, communication skills, customer service skills, decision making skills, dexterity skills. Also depending on the state you have to have a license in order to begin working as an optician. In addition you also need an Associate's Degree, or Certification from a community college or technical school.

Demand: Through the years 2014-2024 there is a 24% growth in the Optician job.

Reflection: Would you like to be one? Why? Why not?
    I would not like to a Optician because I have never liked going into an eyewear store. I also don't have that much interest in business and that is a skill that is required to become an Optician.
